Pietermaai District is an area I use to visit when I was young because of the library there, we used to call “leeszaal” at the Johan van Walbeeckplein or plaza, the white building in front of Scuba Lodge. (By the way Johan van Walbeeck is the first Dutch captain that set foot on Curacao and claimed it in 1634.)
I love reading adventures and history books and had a membership to loan books and I use to walk from my school adjacent the Temple at Queen Wilhelmina Plein to the library about 750 meters away.
Back then (1965) these mansions were in poor conditions but now almost all of the historic mansions are renovated. This area is kind of resurrected from the dead and given new life. I like the way it is done.
It became now a must to visit while on Curacao. It is trendy, colorful and exotic. It has nice restaurants, small shops, bars, and cafes. These are located by the sea along the street of Pietermaai, but includes also the area towards Waaigat . It offers ambiance, music, delicious food, entertainment, exotix drinks, what have you. No wonder It is called now the Soho or the Quartier Latin of Curacao.
Pietermaai district is well known for it’s nightly activities and entertainments but also for fine dining.
